A torrential rainfall that began late Saturday night and continued into Sunday morning has left severe destruction in Malam Madori Local Government Area of Jigawa State, where about 70 houses were damaged.

The council’s Information Officer, Alhaji Musa Muhammad, confirmed the incident on Monday. He explained that several homes in Shagari Quarters, Tonikutara, Gandun Sarki, Gandun Bundugoma and nearby communities were either destroyed or flooded when heavy waters overran the drainage systems.

Among the victims is Umar Abba of Gandun Sarki, who revealed that his house was one of more than 30 completely lost to the disaster. Many displaced families, according to community leader Bulama Jamilu, are now seeking refuge with relatives.

The Chairman of the council, Alhaji Salisu Sani, visited the affected areas to sympathise with residents and directed the Local Emergency Management Committee to carry out an immediate assessment. The Committee’s Chairperson, Hajiya Amina Haruna, said lawmaker Hamza Adamu had already provided truckloads of sand and other relief support, while the council supplied a pumping machine to channel the water away.

In addition, a delegation led by Hamza Muhammad, Senior Special Adviser to Governor Umar Namadi on Community Affairs, inspected the flood-hit areas and assured residents that urgent measures would be taken to prevent future occurrences.
